# Casertavecchia, the medieval village on the hill

Ten kilometres from the Royal Palace and four hundred metres up, Casertavecchia is the village Caserta grew from. The streets are pedestrianised, the cathedral dates from the twelfth century, and from up here you can see the whole plain of Caserta.

## In brief

- About 10 km north-east of Caserta, at 401 metres above sea level.
- Worth seeing: the Cathedral of San Michele Arcangelo, the bell tower of 1234 and the castle tower.
- The centre is pedestrianised: you leave the car at the entrance to the village.
- The Caserta Link service, train plus AIR bus, runs except on Sundays and public holidays.

## The village

Casertavecchia is the medieval town whose people moved down to the plain over the following centuries, until modern Caserta grew up around the Royal Palace. The village has stayed small and compact: stone lanes, low houses, small squares. You can walk round all of it in a couple of hours.

## The cathedral and the bell tower

The Cathedral of San Michele Arcangelo is the heart of the village, with a stone façade and an interior with a nave and two aisles. Beside it stands the bell tower, completed in 1234, whose octagonal top has made it the emblem of Casertavecchia.

## The castle tower

On the edge of the village stands the great tower of the medieval castle. From here you look out over the plain of Caserta, with the Royal Palace in the middle.

## Getting there

By car it is about twenty minutes up from Caserta on a hill road; the centre is pedestrianised, so you leave the car at the entrance to the village. Except on Sundays and public holidays there is also the Caserta Link service, train plus AIR bus.

## From Royal Palace B&B

From our private car park you head straight for the hill, without driving through any restricted traffic zones (ZTL). Casertavecchia is lovely at sunset, after a day at the Royal Palace.
