Timings
| What | Approximate time | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Apartments | 2½ hours | Open 8:30–19:15, last entry 18:15 |
| Royal Park and English Garden | 4 hours | Close before the palace, with hours that change every month |
These are the times given on the palace website. The palace has five storeys and about 1,400 rooms, but the visit follows a set route: the Grand Staircase, the Palatine Chapel, and the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century apartments.
Half a day
- The Royal Apartments, with the Grand Staircase and the Palatine Chapel.
- Out into the park and the electric shuttle to the Fountain of Diana and Actaeon, below the Grand Cascade.
- Back towards the palace on the shuttle.
This is the most common visit for day-trippers from Naples or Rome.
A full day
In winter the park closes early: in November and December last entry is at 14:30. Go in at 8:30, when it opens, see the park and the English Garden while there is light, and keep the apartments for the afternoon. From April to September the park stays open until 19:00 and you can do it the other way round, leaving the gardens for the cooler hours.
Shuttle, golf buggies and bikes
- Electric shuttle: runs along the central axis, about 3 km, stopping at the park entrance, the Dolphin Fountain, the Fountain of Aeolus and the Fountain of Diana and Actaeon. It costs €3 return, paid on board, from 9:00 until closing time.
- Golf buggies: €10 for an hour in the park, €15 for an hour and a half including the English Garden, €10 for an hour in the English Garden only.
- Bikes: €5 an hour, €6 for e-bikes. Bikes can only come in through Corso Giannone and are not allowed in the English Garden.
- Audio guides: €5 for the apartments or the park, €8 for both, €4 for children.
Three practical tips
- On the busiest days, an online ticket with a time slot saves you queuing at the ticket office.
- The palace is closed on Tuesdays: if you only have one day, avoid it.
- You cannot go back in on the same ticket. Bring water and comfortable shoes for the park.
From Royal Palace B&B
Staying close to the park means you can go in at 8:30, when it is quieter, and split the visit without rushing. The B&B is a few minutes’ walk from the Corso Giannone entrance and 1.4 km from Piazza Carlo di Borbone; the car stays in our private car park.
Frequently asked questions
Is half a day enough for the Royal Palace?
Yes, if you see the Royal Apartments and take the shuttle to the Grand Cascade. For the English Garden, and to see the park on foot, you need the whole day.
Can you see the park on foot?
Yes, but the Via d’Acqua is about 3 km long one way. The alternatives are the electric shuttle, golf buggies and hire bikes.
Is it better to start with the palace or the park?
In winter, start with the park, which closes in the early afternoon, while the apartments stay open until 19:15. In summer the order matters less.
